Injure Your Knee After Running The NYC Marathon? Here's 3 Treatment Options

It is many runners dream to compete in the New York City Marathon. It's a grueling race, one that sends runners pounding across the asphalt all over the city. This can really put stress on ones knees. So, if you're someone who has recently ran the marathon, and has found that it has messed up your knee, then here are three ways to deal with that pain.

Rest, Ice, and IT Band Stretches

If the knee is just a bit stressed out, and it is similar to discomfort that you have experienced before, then you can try a simple combination or rest, icing, and stretching. If you rest it up for a few days, and ice it, then, if it's not too painful, try to stretch out your IT band. This is a really big trouble spot for runners. The Iliotibial band is a ligament that runs up the side of your leg and can get tight and inured if you over do it on a long run (which is just what a marathon is). The best way to deal with this is to rest and also do side stretches. You can find videos online which show you exactly how to stretch. The stretches are not obviously beneficial for your knee (you are stretching your side, and you might think your stretching your hip muscles) but this will help loosen up the IT band.

Deep Tissue Massage

Sometimes stretching is not enough. You might have tight quads, or not have stretched out your IT band ahead of time and really messed up your muscles. These tight muscles can pull on your knee ligaments and cause pain. What you might want to do is go in for a deep tissue massage. The masseuse will be able to really work out any kings or tight spots and help with the pain.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Sometimes you need something more than stretching and muscle manipulation. Sometimes the joints in your knee or hip get out of wack after pounding the pavement for hours while you're running. To solve this problem you need to make an appointment with a chiropractor care center. They will be able to adjust your knee or hip joints and determine if there are any other issues. You don't want to try and compensate for joint pain and change your running gait, that can create serious problems down the line. It's best to have the chiropractor deal with your knee and hip problems and get yourself back into top condition.
