Massage For Premature Babies

Humans are biologically wired to respond to touch, and skin on skin contact of any kind can release certain chemicals such as oxytocin – the chemical thought to be responsible for human bonding – and beta endorphins – the chemical responsible for growth. For premature babies, studies show that the use of touch and gentle massage has a huge positive impact on the growth and development of babies born too early. In fact, babies deprived of massage and skin on skin touch often have retarded growth and development. For those mothers with premature babies, here is some information about helping your baby thrive despite their fragile condition.

Initial Techniques For Fragile Preemies

Often, premature babies will remain for some time in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) incubator or facility. The tiny size and fragile condition of your baby may scare you about how to massage them without harming them, but there are many ways you can massage your baby and facilitate their growth with the right techniques.

Begin by holding the baby's hand or feet with a very light touch. This is a great way to begin massage if you are unable to pick them up. Once you are comfortable with this, you can gently cup your hands around their head, bottom, legs or belly and simply hold your hands there for a period of time without applying heavy pressure. Until the baby is a little older and sturdier, it is best to avoid actually stroking their tender skin as this may be uncomfortable for the baby.

Massage For More Developed Preemies

When your baby is able to be held and touched more often, some great massage techniques include warming your hands so your baby will never be uncomfortable, then start by gently using stroking and circling motions with your hands on their exposed skin.

Watch the baby's reaction to the touch, and if the baby becomes distressed, you will know to not use that particular stroke or technique. However, if the baby remains still and at ease, you can move on to more massage. After your baby is comfortable with your hands and massage, it is best to use the same type of massage each time. For example, massage the same areas in the same order each time, such as working from the feet upward. This helps them become used to the touch and both baby and parent can bond.

Massage, similar to what you would get for yourself at a place like Inner Beauty Concepts, can make a remarkable difference in the growth and development of premature babies and can help the parent and baby bond as well.
