Is It Possible To Have A False Positive With A COVID-19 Test?

If you are wondering if you have COVID-19, you might be considering getting a test. However, you might also be worried that receiving the COVID-19 test will return a false positive if you have recently had a cold since a cold can be caused by various coronaviruses. However, this isn't actually true and the test is designed specifically to detect COVID-19.

How a COVID-19 Test Works

The goal of the test is to check for genetic material that is related to the coronavirus by inspecting the nasopharyngeal secretions. The test uses one of several methods to detect the genome of the virus.

COVID-19 Gene Test Process

After swabbing a tissue, a reagent needs to be used to break open the virus and expose the viral genome. The viral genome is replicated many times over. Another reagent has to bind to a replicated genetic complex. The reagent has a marker bound to it that is meant to glow when examined by a lab technician.

The test will be able to determine whether or not you are infected with COVID-19. However, it will not be able to determine if you have immunity and it will also not be able to determine if you were exposed to COVID-19 in the past.

The COVID-19 Immunoglobulin Test Process

Some COVID-19 tests instead rely on immunoglobulins found in your body. IgG and IgM are produced in the human body in response to a COVID-19 infection. To detect whether or not you have COVID-19 using this method, the technician will take a few droplets of blood or plasma. The droplets are placed inside a cassette that contains a chemical that will bind to the immunoglobulin.

The test results need to be read shortly after the test has been performed. If too much time passes, the test results will not be accurate. There is also a third line used that serves as the control line and helps show that the test is working properly. You will either receive a negative test result or you will receive a result that shows the presence of IgC, IgM, or both.

What to Do After a Positive Test Result

If enough of the virus is present in the sample, you will receive a positive test result. Then, you will be able to take the appropriate actions such as taking time off, resting, social distancing, and wearing masks. Under some circumstances, you may even need to be hospitalized.
